“You were once wild here. Don’t let them tame you.”

About me
Most of what I know and do creatively, I learned on my own. I love to paint, draw, play piano, (and a little bit of guitar), compose music, and write lyrics, and spoken word poetry. My mixed-race heritage (Black, White and Native American) and my upbringing have molded and informed my creative work. There are often themes of race, poverty, mental illness and death, but also of survival, redemption and of overcoming, in my writing and paintings. I invite you to explore my website where you will find paintings, drawings, collage, music, song lyrics, poetry, prose and videos that I have done for other local organizations. My Influences: Art: Romare Bearden, Alicia Henry, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Della Wells, Aaron Douglas, Thornton Dial, Lesley Patterson-Marx, Alma Thomas, pretty much all African American artists creating during the Harlem Renaissance. Music: Tracy Chapman, Mindy Smith, Chris Whitley, Anna Nalick, Phillip Glass, Lori McKenna, Tupac Shakur Writing: Rebecca Walker, Charles Bukowski, Anais Nin, C. Joybell C., Shel Silverstein, James C. Floyd (Jefferson Street Poet), Stephen Dunn, Gwendolyn Joyce Mintz (my mama) |
